The highest crime rates were in the late 1970s and early 1980s during the "Cocaine Cowboy" era, since Miami was where the majority of cocaine entered the United States from Colombia.
In the early 1980s, Miami was considered America's murder capital due to all the drug related murders going on at the time.
From this Miami developed its own organized crime.
Such crimes inspired the famous television series "Miami Vice." .
